Nana’s Scholarship

The Jan Fenton Memorial Skating Fund

On January 22, 2015, Alexis Fenton’s Nana, Jan Fenton, passed away from an unexpected illness she could not overcome. Many people knew her from her unending chatter, her British accent, and her absolute love for figure skating. She knew no strangers and lived life to the fullest. People often saw her skating at the area ice rinks with her granddaughters and were charmed by her enthusiasm and joy while on the ice.

To honor Jan’s life and her passion for skating, her family has created a memorial skating scholarship. Beginning this year, Nana’s Fund will fully sponsor a skater’s membership dues. There will be an award for both a younger and older Silver Blades skater based on a written composition about skating.

All essays must be written by Silver Blades skaters 18 and under. Entries will be chosen anonymously by the family and MUST be submitted by May 31, 2023. The awards will be announced at the Silver Blades banquet. Please see below for instructions on how to submit scholarship essays.

We strive to offer this scholarship as an annual award. If you would like to donate to the fund, a check can be made out to Silver Blades, marked as Nana’s Scholarship Fund and left in our box at KCIC. All money donated to Nana’s Fund will be kept in a specifically designated account for future scholarship awards.

TO SUBMIT AN ESSAY for consideration for Nana’s Scholarship, please note;

  • There are two different age groups; skaters currently in kindergarten through 6th grade and 7th grade and above.
  • The younger group will write a 500 word or less composition and the older group will write a 1,000 word or less essay, on the topic of your choice.
  • The deadline for submission is May 31, 2023. Essays cannot be accepted or postmarked after this date, no exceptions.

  • If submitting by email, please list the skater’s name in the subject line.
  • If not submitting by email, please list the skater’s name clearly on an outside envelope! This will be how we will identify the winner once the essay has been chosen.
